13/10 About Toon and Gloom at the Cottage

13/10 About Toon and Gloom at the Cottage
Well, what about last week? The FA Cup saw more giant killings than a Jack-and-the-Beanstalk convention. I mean, we all expect the odd shock here and there, but to see so many Premiership teams humbled was beyond anyone's expectation. After a difficult draw for the likes of Bolton, West Ham and Blackburn, the outright market remains largely unchanged. Chelsea (11/4), Man Utd (7/2), Arsenal (13/2) and Liverpool (13/2) still head the betting, with Newcastle offering the best of the rest, after a kind draw, at 14/1.

We're back to the nitty-gritty of league football this weekend, so hopefully matches may go a bit more to form than last weeks madness! For me, the standout bet of the weekend is Fulham to beat Newcastle at 13/10. The reason Fulham occupy 14th place is their away form. At home they've a better record than Bolton, Newcastle and Man City. After last week's disaster against Leyton Orient, Chris Coleman was scathing in his team's performance, so there could be a backlash here.

It's also worth remembering that Newcastle are constantly overrated by the bookmakers. We all remember the glory days of Keegan, Ginola, Asprilla and the like, but it appears that the romanticism of Newcastle and their long-suffering fans affects the odds compilers, who always show the Magpies too much respect. Newcastle (7/4 to win the match) are only 3 points better off than Fulham, and will be without Michael Owen. The Magpies have recorded only one league win in 10 attempts without the England striker, and that came against hapless Sunderland.

Premiership Pick:

Fulham to beat Newcastle @ 13/10

The Sports Column Jan 9th

09th January 2006

By Kevin Reavy

Did you ever immediately regret a decision? For example...maybe you were at a bar, had a little too much to drink, and went home with a "sub-par" female--and you knew it. Hell, you went into the situation knowing such an occurrence would happen and that the following morning you may wake up to something a bit more nauseating than a hangover. Still, you did it. You accepted it. And every second before, during, and after, you regretted it.

Yeah. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers want to sign TO. Good luck with that.

Texas Ousts USC

I was watching the game with my buddies, AJ Feeley, Rob Johnson, and Kyle Boller, and none of us thought there was anything at all wrong with putting too much stock in one particular performance in a single game. Perfectly normal.

Phillies Remain in Neutral

The Philadelphia Phillies signed Ryan Franklin last week. Now, they have another "innings eater." This is not a good thing as I see it. Jon Lieber is supposed to be an innings eater also. I mean, how many damn calories are in these innings anyway?

I know, I know. I'm just bitter because I'm a Phillies fan, and rather than an "innings eater" I'd like to see the Phils sign a "good pitcher." Call me crazy.

Vick II to Turn Pro

Marcus Vick was kicked off the Virginia Tech team for, essentially, a number of incidents which became too much for the school to overlook. Vick will reportedly enter the NFL draft, where he is not projected as a quarterback, but rather a Terrell Owens.

New York Yankees vs. the World

George Steinbrenner has gotten his wish, and Alex Rodriguez, his best player, will not be playing in the World Baseball Classic. If you ask me, If he wants to worry about injuries, he might want to narrow in on AROD's chronic choking problem that seems to surface every playoff series.

Plus, Rodriguez could use some positive PR playing for the US team. It's bad enough that pretty much everyone in the country hates him...but I'm pretty sure his own teammates and fans of the team hate him just the same. Derek Jeter has a Ray Finkle-style shrine with a "666" numbered Rodriguez jersey on his bedroom wall, and he told me last week that he traded AROD for Ty Wigginton in his franchise on MLB 2005.

Dan Snyder's One Million Reasons Why Not

In Brewster's Millions fashion, Redskins owner, Dan Snyder, will reportedly pay African-American coach, Gregg Williams, $1 million if he is not selected as Joe Gibbs' successor at head coach.

Other teams got upset that, because Williams is being denied the opportunity to seek a new job, they will not be able to call him in for a condescending, meaningless, quota-driven interview to satisfy league minority hiring procedure. Which is, like, really unfair.

Herm Edwards, Big Chief

Former Jets coach, Herm Edwards, was put up for bid on ebay last week. The Chief's outbid me by about $11.99 million, but I don't care--damn thing's broke anyway.

That will do it for this week's week in review. Stop by next time to see if TO can stay out of the headlines a record three weeks in a row.

World Series reliever Lindblad dies

04th January 2006

Paul Lindblad, a middle reliever who pitched in the World Series for the New York Yankees and Oakland, has died after a long bout with Alzheimer's disease.

paul Lindblad

Lindblad was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 1993 and spent the last nine years in a nursing home. He died on New Year's Day. He was 64.

Lindblad pitched 14 seasons, his last game coming for the New York Yankees against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 1978 World Series.

The left-hander was part of two World Series championship teams in Oakland, pitching the ninth and 10th innings to win the Athletics' 11-inning game over the New York Mets in 1973. He didn't make an appearance in the 1974 World Series.

At his funeral last week, Lindblad's casket was flanked by two replica World Series trophies.

The pitcher known as ``Bladder'' was 68-63 with 64 saves with a 3.29 ERA in 655 games for the Kansas City Athletics (1965-67), Oakland Athletics (1968-71 and 1973-76); Washington Senators (1971); Texas (1972 and 1977-78); and the Yankees (1978).

Lindblad was the last pitcher faced by Hall of Famer Willie Mays, who grounded out as a pinch-hitter to end the 11-inning World Series game in 1973. On the final day of the 1975 regular season against the California Angels, Lindblad combined with Vida Blue, Glenn Abbott and Rollie Fingers on a no-hitter.
